Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes launched dance into the 20th century with pieces like 1910's Schéhérezade. Alonzo King's LINES Ballet, one of San Francisco's foremost contemporary-dance companies, has reinvented that influential dance for the new millennium. Commissioned by the Monaco Dance Forum in honor of the Ballets Russes centennial, and premiered in Monte Carlo last December, the updated Schéhérezade takes The 1,001 Nights as a jumping-off point (leaping-off, really) for King's sensuous choreography and powerful dancers, who are draped in costumes by Colleen Quen. Tabla virtuoso ZakirHussain revisits the original Rimsky-Korsakov score on Persian and Western instruments, and plays live during each performance. Except for the opening gala on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., the show includes a reprise of Dust and Light, which plays counterpoint to Schéhérezadein dappled light, intimate movement, and music by Corelli and Poulenc. Wed.-Thu. 7:30 p.m.; Fri-Sat. 8 p.m..; Sun. 5 p.m.; $25-$75. 415-978-2787 or
