Alonzo King LINES Ballet

When: Sat., Nov. 11, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $30
This is the third time Adji Cissoko and Courtney Henry, dancers with the renowned Alonzo King LINES Ballet, will perform in Oakland as part of the Matatu Festival. Over the years, the dancers have incorporated more of their personality into these performances. With Henry’s imminent move to Germany, this year’s edition felt particularly crucial. The evening will start with a short film exploring the concept of healing through movement as well as memory, pleasure, pain, and identity. Through bodily expression, Cissoko and Henry trace their lineages — to Germany and the United States, respectively. It’s a collaboration with filmmaker Lino Brown and Cissoko’s father, kora master Al Housseynou Cissoko, who provides the traditional Senegalese soundtrack. After the screening, the two dancers will perform, which is sure to be bittersweet. “I’m excited for this to be my last chapter,” Henry said — for now, at least.
