Alon Nechushtan One Day Only Staff Pick

When: Sun., July 21, 4 p.m. 2019
Price: 20.00
A capaciously inventive pianist/composer from New York City by way of Tel Aviv, Alon Nechushtan makes a rare East Bay appearance with a blazing young trio featuring two rising East Bay bandleaders. Oakland drummer Dillon Vado and Hayward bassist Tyler Harlow are both graduates of Berkeley’s California Jazz Conservatory (where Nechushtan gives a workshop on fusing jazz and Middle Eastern elements 11:30 a.m. Sunday). Part of a brilliant wave of Israeli jazz artists who’ve expanded the already global mix of sounds that characterize the contemporary New York scene, Nechushtan has collaborated with some of the music’s most influential and adventurous artists, including William Parker, Don Byron, Mark Dresser, Andrew Cyrille, and Berkeley’s Ben Goldberg. He also performs solo Saturday afternoon as part of Golden Gate Park’s Flower Piano festival and Saturday evening at San Jose’s Art Boutiki with Dillon, Harlow and saxophonist Shay Salhoff.
