Re: “Transportation Agencies to Study Environmental and Health Impacts of New Freight-Hauling Projects and Protect Low-Income Communities

Efforts to understand the magnitude of and reduce emissions from freight movement in the East Bay area - make great sense, and are ones that industry has supported. New clean diesel technology heavy-duty trucks bought since 2010 have near zero emissions for particulates and nitrogen oxide emissions. Getting more of those on the road into freight hauling activities will deliver cleaner air faster. Zero emission tractor trailers hauling 80,000 lbs of goods are not technologically feasible today, nor for the foreseeable future.

Vigorously reducing idling and getting the bad actors off the road and ensuring proper maintenance of existing equipment is an important role for communities and regulators alike.

Its a mystery why the East Bay express - who may want to be a fact based objective outlet for news and information chooses to use a stock photography image of billowing smoke tractor trailer truck that is clearly from some kind of performance track event where the vehicles have been modified.

California has the most advanced in-use diesel emissions fleet programs and testing requirements. This kind of photo choice distracts from the otherwise meaningful aspects of this story and is just a stupid choice.
