All of the Above with DJs Wonway and Leydis

When: Fri., June 15, 10 p.m. 2012
Price: free

It's customary in many clubs to treat the DJ as a mere designer or -- worse yet -- as furniture in the room. But that's impossible to do when the DJ is, in fact, the most eye-catching person there. That's usually the case for Leydis, the lovely, dimpled, head-wrapped Cuban turntablist who cut her teeth performing with Panamanian hip-hop group Los Rakas, and who is now a headliner in her own right. Here in the Bay Area she's known primarily for slinging wax, but she apparently had a lofty career in the Havana arts scene as well, having launched a theater collective, produced mixtapes, and been an activist before immigrating to the US in 2006. Now she specializes in reggae, dancehall, house, soul, Afrobeat, and all varieties of Latin music, although hip-hop is still her bailiwick. She'll appear with DJ WonwayPosibul of Thinkbeat Radio and the Latin Soul Brothers in a new monthly party, appropriately titled "All of the Above." It happens every third Friday at Rocksteady (1741 San Pablo Ave., Oakland). 10 p.m., free.
