Comedy, Drama
R.W. Goodwin, guiding light behind The X-Files, takes a breather with this entertaining, lovingly crafted comic homage to ‘50s monsters-from-space timewasters — it’s a higher class of timewaster, made for ten times the 1950s budget. When a flying saucer lands near a small desert town in 1957, a scientist (Eric McCormack) and a too-smart-for-her-job waitress (Jenni Baird) join forces with an alien named Urp (also played by McCormack) to combat the hideous Ghota, a giant phallus with one red eye and a tentacle. Just to make sure we get the point, the town’s teenagers are at the movies, watching The Blob. The resemblance of Urp to David Duchovny is probably no accident. Also with Robert Patrick and Dan Lauria (90 min.).
