Re: “Saint Mary's College Faculty Allege Racial Discrimination

I agree with what Cabrilla said. I can only attest to what I experienced at Saint Mary's, not the experiences of others.

However as a Latino student that attended Saint Mary's from 2010-2014, I can honestly say that I had an amazing experience. I obtained a quality education, fostered great relationships with professors/other faculty members, and finally ( and in my opinion, most importantly :) ) made amazing life long friends from very different ethnic and socio economic backgrounds (I made incredible friends that are white, black, latino, Asian and middle eastern.....BTW The majority of my friends feel the same as I do) Perhaps I benefitted from the struggles of other students that came before me like Miramar. All I can say is that I hardly ever felt discriminated against in any way shape or form by students or faculty. I'm not saying Saint Mary's is perfect, or that there aren't things I would change about it, but if I had to do it all over again I would choose SMC. I would never trade the experience and memories I made at Saint Mary's for anything.

(Obviously there could have been the rare incident were an ignorant or incinerated student may have said a stupid comment about race, but nothing that concretely sticks... But 1. Where doesn't that happen? And 2. I'm sure it happens a lot less at SMC than in less enlightened parts of our country)

Again, just my own personal experience as a student from 2010 to 2014. On the professor and other faculty side of things, walk around campus this week. You won't go far before encountering a "minority" faculty member, be it someone of color or female. :)

Go Gaels!!!!

Re: “Saint Mary's College Faculty Allege Racial Discrimination

I graduated from Saint Mary's in 2014. I personally had 5 professors who are people of "color". I also had another 6 professors who are women. I even had an openly gay professor... At a catholic school! If you were to spend a day on campus, you would also realize that many of the administrators ( study abroad program, academic counsellors, etc...) are people of color. From my experience, ( as a person of color) I think that this article overwhelmingly miss represents Saint Mary's.
