In Alexander Maksik’s newest novel, A Marker to Measure Drift, the twenty-year-old protagonist, Jacqueline, has lost all sense of grounding: Having moved to a hillside village on a small Greek island, she finds her mysterious past keeps coming back to haunt her. Maksik weaves together Jacqueline’s present experience in a foreign country with potent hallucinations of her past life in Liberia to give the sense of a woman searching desperately for the markers that measure life’s drift.
