It seems like not much changes in Alameda, and its cadre of old-school diners, including Ole’s Waffle Shop, Jim’s Coffee Shop, and Albert’s Cafe, doesn’t seem to change much either. But in 2018, Albert’s Cafe was purchased by new owners, who kept the same menu of American breakfast favorites while adding a Salvadoran menu. Try the traditional pupusas stuffed with cheese, beans, and pork, or create your own pupusa with ingredients like chicken, beef, zucchini, and loroco, an edible flower bud. Or try the shrimp soup, which is brimming with shrimp served in the shell. The broth is buttery and rich, while spinach, onions, tomato, and lime add brightness. The cafe has become known over the years for “The Hippie,” a pile of hash browns with grilled onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, and mushrooms on top, plus toast and eggs your way. It won’t draw brunch crowds, but the price is remarkably reasonable, and the portions are huge.
