Aja Monet: My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter

When: Fri., Nov. 10, 8-10 p.m. 2017
Price: $10, $12

Aja Monet

Since she became the youngest person to win the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam title in 2007, Aja Monet has developed her revolutionary voice and philosophical artistry between iambic pentameter lines. The writer and activist has spoken at such prestigious events as President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2008 and the Women’s March in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter, Monet’s second book of poetry, weaves together her childhood in Brooklyn and adolescence in Chicago with her enlightening musings on womanhood, spirituality, and modern-day political tensions. She’ll be reading excerpts from her book on Nov. 10 at The Bodega at Duende, followed by a reading at the Starline Social Club on Nov. 11 as part of the Matutu Festival of Stories.
