Nobody can play the blues quite like Ahmad Jamal, a pianist known for using the spaces between notes just as artfully as the notes proper. An inspiration for trumpeter Miles Davis, Jamal was always known for his preternatural groove -- he was someone who could stretch out melodies and push the beat just enough to make you go oooh. His sound got a little heavier over time, as the pianist began incorporating Latin rhythms and more imaginative chord voicings. But to this day, he still prefers the looseness of a trio. Jamal performs Wed.-Fri. (June 4-6) at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland (510 Embarcadero), accompanied by bassist James Cammack and drummer IdrisMuhammed. $24, $28 Yoshis.com
