AHA Benefit w/ The Evens

When: Thu., Oct. 3, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $7
It’s safe to call Ian MacKaye — the former Minor Threat frontman and Fugazi founder — a hardcore punk legend, but he’s not content to live in the past. His latest project, The Evens, holds some of the fury of his previous bands but with a quieter rage, aided by his wife and bandmate Amy Farina. With MacKaye on baritone guitar and Farina on drums, the duo exchanges unusual rhythms and trades off vocal duties. Farina’s powerful voice and the duo’s tightly wound songs align its sound with Nineties riot grrrl bands. On The Evens’ latest album, The Odds, the mood is somewhat contemplative and down-tempo, but decidedly punk in its commentary on class and power. The band has also maintained MacKaye’s DIY ethos, playing intimate shows with low ticket prices and humanitarian fundraising aims — like its upcoming appearance at the Florence Schwimley Little Theater (1860 Allston Way, Berkeley), for which proceeds go to the Arts and Humanities Academy at Berkeley High.
