Agrippina 2000

When: July 24-25, 8 p.m. and Sun., July 26, 2 p.m. 2009
Price: $22, $28

"Opera by any means necessary" is their motto. Let us hope the means are good ones, as Oakland Opera, aka Oakland Opera Theater, presents Handel's Agrippina 2000. "A postmodern view of Handel's ancient political farce," the opera has been reset in an absurdist fusion of multiple time periods filled with conflicting anachronisms and projected imagery by filmmaker Ethan Hoerneman. More than the settings have been finagled with; the score for the opera, which celebrates its 300th birthday this year, has been reset for four musicians, some with electronic instruments. Depending upon Tom Dean's direction and the quality of the singers, this one will leave you either buzzing, bemused, or befuddled. At Oakland Metro Operahouse(630 3rd St., Oakland) on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, (8 p.m.), and Sunday, July 26 (2 p.m.).$22, $28. OaklandOpera.org or 510-763-1146
