Re: “Meet Oakland's New Go-To Lobbyist

Mr. Gammon:
In your article, you write:
“The school district immediately launched an investigation, and quickly discovered that Kakishiba had done no such thing, and wasn't involved in making the fliers. In fact, the fliers were not even sent home with kids, but handed out by volunteers on the sidewalk in front of schools.”
I wonder how you come to these conclusions since you clearly did not consult the facts of the matter, the record, or any of the parents who filed this complaint, including myself. Of course, it is easier to conclude something did not happen if you don’t bother talking to any of the witnesses …
For the record, my experience of what happened and the investigation is not represented in this paper in any way.
Using School Children for Political Gain
I was asked by a mother from ASCEND to explain a flyer that WAS PASSED OUT TO HER DAUGHTER AT SCHOOL. I read the flyer and became enraged that it was telling parents that their children would get asthma if the Gateway Project was built. While I support differing points of view and intellectual debate, the school yard is not the place to have this debate! I was also very angry that schools with primarily non-English speaking parents would be targeted with flyers spreading lies.
The Investigation
When I was interviewed by the attorney, it was clear to me that she was a new attorney who was not at all familiar with the law. In fact, I felt sorry for her. Based on my experience, I am not surprised that the so-called investigation did not turn up any wrong doing. You can’t find what you refuse to look for.
As of yet, NO ONE has looked into how our children were used to perpetuate a political agenda. Mr. Gammon, I ask that you look into it, as we are still awaiting resolution on this important issue.
