Aftersight

When: Feb. 25-March 25 2009

Rocky Angel, Carolyn Haydu, and Francesca Pera consider how events shape consciousness. Angel combines the roles of folk artist, satirist, and psychedelic visionary in his oil-and-glitter paintings: one depicts a church funeral as a divine puppet show observed by a wall of eyes, with pastor, congregants, and even the Grim Reapers as marionettes; another depicts a battleground of devils just above an underground cavern of ghosts, beneath a red sky full of gigantic protozoa. Pera's collage-encaustics on panel read as sumptuously colored aerial maps or microscope slides; in addition to their scale ambiguity, the works transcend time: the repeated printed motifs (hands, faces, brains) covered by grids of wax dots suggest both the domestic (wallpaper and fabric) and the exotic (tattooing and scarification). Haydu's wall installation juxtaposes open books with overlapping traceries of grasses, literary/pictorial artifacts reabsorbed into the soil and reborn in nature.
