Filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son; Maborosi) has established himself as Japan’s leading director of family character studies, and this story of a newly divorced Tokyo under-achiever (Hiroshi Abe) trying to reconcile with his young son (Taiyo Yoshizawa) and his aging mother (Kilin Kiki) hits just the right notes with a beautifully light touch. Sentimental journeys and spiritual awakenings are Kore-eda’s cup of tea. The writing, direction, and performances achieve an emotional subtlety that few can match. Compares well with the work of the master, Yasujiro Ozu. Written and directed by Kore-eda (117 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
