Combining two short stories from Haruki Murakami's book after the quake,Frank Galati's stage adaptation beautifully interweaves the long friendship of writer Junpei and his college crush Sayoko with a fantastical story about a giant frog recruiting a bank official to save Tokyo from an underground worm. Hanson Tse is terrific as Junpei, especially in the way he transforms from his older, more assured persona to his introverted teenage self. Alternating as Sayoko's child Sala with Gemma Megumi Fa-Kaji, Madison Logan V. Phan keeps Junpei on his toes with discerning questions that shape his storytelling. Jennifer Shin strikes the one false note as Sayoko, falling into a monotone whenever she has to carry a serious moment. KeongSim is hilarious as Frog, who quotes Nietzsche and Tolstoy, and carries himself with a suave, unflappable air. It's particularly impressive to watch Paul H. Juhn transform from buff college jock Takatsuki to meek banker Katagiri, who makes Clark Kent look like, well, Superman.
