Afro-Cuban All Stars

When: Wed., Feb. 25, 8 p.m. and Thu., Feb. 26, 11 a.m. 2009
Price: $4

The whole world fell in love with Afro-Cuban music after WimWenders unveiled his 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club, about an improbable US tour featuring Havana's hottest jazz musicians. They numbered about fourteen in all, and included such standard-bearers as pianist Rubén González, tresplayer Compay Segundo, and guiro player Juan de Marcos González (unrelated to Rubén), who at that time was putting together his own crackerjack band with many of the same people. Over the next decade Cuban music enjoyed a new renaissance and González' Afro-Cuban All-Stars continued touring the world in various iterations. Once a year they descend on UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave.) for one night of fiery big-band music that inevitably turns into a giant dance party. This year's performance on Wednesday, Feb. 25 kicks off with a lecture on Latin music by KCSM radio host Jesse Chuy Varela. 8 p.m., $24-$46.
