Afghanistan is really making progress — now it has its own version of American Idol. True, one of the contestants received death threats for singing her song bareheaded and dancing in public, and the competition is intensely tribal, but hey, that’s showbiz. This heavily ironic documentary, directed by British journalist/filmmaker Havana Marking, follows along as a group of would-be singing sensations defy the lingering influence of the Taliban (music, dance, and television were banned from 1996 to 2004) by getting up in front of a nationwide TV audience and performing love songs — as long as the nation’s religious leaders approve, that is. We also visit a beauty shop and Kabul Zoo, where there’s a pig, a lion, and a peacock. A UK/Afghanistan co-production (87 min.).
