Actor Arsinée Khanjian, longtime member of filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s stock company, turns in a wonderfully sinister performance as a high-school teacher with a guilty secret — one of many recondite sources of pain in Egoyan’s emotional detective story about an orphaned teenager named Simon (Devon Bostick) coming to grips with the loss of his parents in a car crash years before. Writer-director Egoyan (Where the Truth Lies, The Sweet Hereafter) has trod this ground before — the wistful expressions, the bare winter trees of Ontario, the mournful cello in Mychael Danna’s music score — but somehow it all seems reassuring, even the tensest scenes of fractious urbanites locking horns. It’s Egoyan’s version of a social drama. With Scott Speedman, Noam Jenkins, and Kenneth Welsh (100 min.).
