Re: “When Landlords Target Tenants in Rent-Controlled Buildings

I don't know what's going on with the above comment, but my friend lives in this building and their case did go to court. Also, the article sites multiple cases, not just one. Btw, this article doesn't necessarily go into the full scope of the harassment undertaken by the LL, which included aiming security cameras into the doorways of people's apartments; randomly instituting new building entry guidelines that locked out anyone living there who was not listed on copies of leases that were clearly forged with names misspelled, etc; and bringing the "illegal sublet" charge against lease holders who have a family member residing with them. This LL is a bad actor and the only reason they pursue these illegal evictions is because the assume tenants will just move on and don't have the resources to fight them. There should be legislation in place to discourage LL's from filing for evictions they know to be illegal, simply because they think they can and there are no penalties for doing so. Oakland is going to hemmorage it's rent controlled housing stock if it can't figure out how to stop this kind of activity, and take a lesson from SF, it is a lot easier to maintain existing affordable housing than to build housing once it has been lost.
