Charles Evans Jr.’s well-constructed documentary takes us through thirty years of the public health campaign against the tobacco industry from the point of view of whistleblower Victor DeNoble, a research scientist for Philip Morris who became disenchanted with his employer’s callousness. The timeline approach gains cumulative effect onscreen as we learn industry secrets and see them gradually exposed, at first by news outlets and then by congressional investigation. DeNoble himself, now a lecturer to youth groups, has a congenial personality — and conveniently, most of the cigarette salesmen and their enablers have an untrustworthy look about them. The one anti-smoking doc to see if you’re only having one. Produced and directed by Evans. (102 min.)
