Comedy, Drama, Romance
Mostly on the strength of his leading players, writer-director Max Mayer’s Manhattanesque tale of a young man suffering from Asperger’s syndrome (English actor Hugh Dancy) finding love with a thoughtful young woman in his apartment building (soulful-eyed Australian Rose Byrne) avoids most of the pathetic pitfalls and instead sprinkles romantic stardust over their lives. Think of it as a Whit (The Last Days of Disco) Stillman cosmopolitan vignette with a medical angle. Even the laborious subplot about Beth’s father (Peter Gallagher) and his legal troubles can’t detract from the filmmaker’s comfy spell. Apt character support by Frankie Faison as Harlan and Amy Irving as Beth’s mother. Mayer, a TV move-over, has the magic touch (99 min.).
