Re: “Are Alameda’s Firefighters too Powerful to be Reformed?

There are a multitude of reasons police and fire fighters do not always live in the cities they protect and specifically Alameda - one, the high cost of living and higher taxes when compared to salaries. If you want more of your city employees to live in Alameda you need to pay them MORE and make the city an attractive place to raise a family. Blighted crime ridden communities attract few city employees. Nobody wants to raise their kids in a slum with poor schools and they shouldn't have to as a condition of employment. Many Police and FD's used to have residency requirements based on miles or response time radius but not so much anymore. I believe there is case law on this. And with regards to Police, there are additional very valid reasons they should not be required to live where they work. Safety, and the safety of their families. The kids are in play nowadays. Used to be bad guys (and gals) still had some morals and respected the children of cops. Now, if bad guy wants to get revenge they often go for the soft targets. And Mr. 3rdGen this is not the 3rd time AFD firefighters and throughout the county screw up, it happens they screw up almost daily. Mostly little screw ups, but sometimes really, really big ones.

Alameda County Fire Dispatch (which handles several cities in the county including Alameda City) has some culpability here, too-and it's high time that dispatch center gets a little scrutiny. Hundreds of delayed and/or inappropriate responses over the past few years. Some patients died. Others did not get the care they needed in a timely manner. Fires tend to get bigger when responses are delayed.
Not only ACFD's dispatch center, but many of the police dispatch centers have difficulty hiring and retaining competent people. You get what you pay for, I guess.
