This Temescal gem is one of the East Bay’s best and most underrated Ethiopian restaurants, with a contemporary atmosphere, kind service, and relatively compact menu. As with other Ethiopian spots, Abesha serves veggie and meat combination platters — excellent ways to experience a wide variety of dishes and admire Abesha’s attention to detail. The stewed meats tend to be more tender than at other hotspots, though the restaurant’s strongest dish is the special kitfo, raw, ground-to-order beef lathered in spiced butter and served with cottage cheese, collards, and extra chili powder.
