Ab-Soul and Dead Prez

When: Fri., March 29, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $20

Listening to Ab-Soul is like entering a club filled with pot smoke, being offered a cup of purple drank (prescription cough syrup and Sprite, for the uninitiated), and led into a circle of conspiracy theorists spouting off about 9/11, UFOs, and the Illuminati. Ab-Soul is the most gloriously paranoid member of Black Hippy -- the LA hip-hop collective that includes Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock -- rapping about aliens building the pyramids, the pineal gland (aka "third eye"), SOPA, and the military-industrial complex. In Ab-Soul's biggest single to date, "Terrorist Threats," off 2012's Control System, he and Danny Brown rap over a ripple of ominous synths, minimal beats, and a ghostly choir. But "Nibiru" might be Ab-Soul's best track, both lyrically and in terms of originality. In it, he compares himself to God, spitting one apocryphal reference after another: The law of relativity's cute, I even sunk Atlantis too/NASA on some bullshit, they always cropping out to my crew ... Mayan calendars, you went to church, we all know Revelations/You see Porsches, behold of pale horse galloping 'cross the nation. Prepare to get on Ab-Soul's elevated level when he performs with Dead Prez, Stefisdope, Kelow, Jahi, and DJ Mike Flo at 1015 Folsom (1015 Folsom St., San Francisco) on Friday, Mar. 29. 9 p.m., $10. 1015.com
