A Week at Calistoga

When: Dec. 2-Jan. 14 2012

Last May, six painters converged on a Napa Valley farm for a painting retreat led by the eminent artist Leigh Hyams. The work inspired by that creative getaway composes this group show, featuring organic abstractions by Joell Jones ("Legacy," "Rosebud"), Logan Payne ("Calistoga," "Calistoga II"), Amy Schaffer ("Emerging," "Back to Life"), and Karen Worth ("It's Green Here," "Flower Study"); empathetic depictions of animals by Carla Saunders ("Willie in Red," "Willie Hanging Out in the Sun") and Rue Whittaker ("Dreamscape," "Sustenance"); house-themed mixed-media sculptures ("Moss House," "Gold House") by Payne; and photos of Hyams accompanied by artistic mottos, e.g., "Wild freedom is the privilege of the disciplined artist" and "A life in art is a journey, not a destination, and painting, far from being a commodity, is a necessity of life." A Week at Calistoga runs through Jan. 14 at OakopolisCreativityCenter (447 25th St., Oakland). 510-663-6920 or
