Biography, Historical drama, Romance
The true story of a full-fledged African king (David Oyelowo) falling in love with a middle-class English woman (Rosamund Pike) makes for a lightly entertaining time at the movies, with its subplot of interracial romance, circa 1950s, and the attendant British Empire objections to it, doing most of the work. Nevertheless, English filmmaker Amma Asante’s direction is straightforward and sincere, as are Oyelowo and Pike’s performances. So it qualifies as one of those unobjectionable historical dramatizations schoolchildren will be forced to watch, as an example. Screenplay by Guy Hibbert (Eye in the Sky) (111 min., 2016, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
