A Tax on Medical Marijuana?

Should pot be taxed? No, we're not asking whether your neighborhood dealer should collect an extra 8.75 percent in sales tax -- although dealers are indeed required to pay income tax on their illegal gains. But what about the local medical marijuana dispensaries? At the behest of Compassionate Caregivers, one of the county's three licensed pot retailers, Supervisor Nate Miley is trying to determine whether the clubs should start doing just that. Board of Equalization flak Anita Gore told Media News that the Board, which oversees the state's sales-tax programs, "treats medical marijuana as taxable merchandise." Who knew? If you can't stand the thought of forking over a dime to the state, perhaps this guy on Craigslist can help you out.
