A Taste of Bunche

In August, Ralph Bunche Academy, a West Oakland high school, will unveil a new production kitchen that gives its students hands-on culinary training. In addition to receiving an academic education, the students also graduate ready to work in the restaurant and hospitality industry. To celebrate the start of the kitchen build, the school is hosting a fundraiser, A Taste of Bunche, where students will prepare the evening’s menu across seven stations. Of course, they’ll have some help — chef Nora Dunning of West Oakland’s Drip Line is one of their advisors — but the students will be behind both the conceptual planning and the physical cooking. The menu reads as eclectic as West Oakland: banh mi sandwiches, chimichurri steak tacos, cioppino, arugula-fennel salad, shrimp and grits, and ice cream sandwiches for dessert. There won’t be any alcohol — this is a high school campus, after all — but mocktails and live jazz should keep things lively.
