Colin Firth, as a 1960s-era closeted gay man mourning the death of his longtime lover, gives a classy, tasteful (almost too tasteful) performance in fashion designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford’s adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel. Time slides by like molasses amid Ford’s fragrance-commercial visuals, heavy on the homo-erotic dreaminess of English prof George’s (Firth) sad predicament and overflowing with sailors, liquor-store-parking-lot hunks, etc. Adding an extra layer of corn is Julianne Moore as George’s straight best friend, a similarly lonely lush also moldering in Santa Monica. Fully padded out with anachronistic jukebox tunes. Screenplay by Ford and David Scearce. Prime Oscar bait (101 min.).
