Director Claude Miller seems to be trying to keep the plot of this WWII-era drama a secret as well. It flashes back and forward confusingly in its circuitous tale of a French Jewish husband (Patrick Bruel) with a wandering eye for an athletic blond (Cécile de France), and the toll his indiscretions take on his wife (Ludivine Sagnier) and young son — all this while avoiding the Nazis in the 1940s. Meanwhile, in 1955 and 1985, the cheater and his second son (Mathieu Amalric) are still sorting it out. The net effect of all this back and forth is to diminish the impact of the story. Approach with caution. Miller and Natalie Carter adapted the screenplay from the novel by Philippe Grimbert (105 min.).
