Even though Oakland’s Crystal Wahpepah launched her Native-focused catering company, Wahpepah’s Kitchen, six years ago, the public has had few opportunities to sample her cooking outside of a pow wow. But she wants that to change — it’s time for Americans to learn about their country’s original cuisine. On Saturday, Mar. 17, Wahpepah, a member of the Kickapoo tribe, will be joined by two other Native American chefs, Brian Yazzie (Diné) and Vincent Medina (Chochenyo Ohlone), at Top Leaf Farms for an evening of indigenous food and tea. This week marks their first collaboration, showcasing traditions from their tribes in contemporary ways. (There’s another event at Berkeley’s Intertribal Friendship House, but it’s already sold out.) On the rooftop garden, Wahpepah plans to serve dehydrated abalone chowder and smoked salmon with a corn crisp. (A lot of Kickapoo cooking is about corn, she explained.) Yazzie has already risen to fame in Minnesota as part of The Sioux Chef, perhaps the country’s most visible Native catering team, which released a cookbook to wide critical acclaim last year. “What they’re doing in other states hasn’t been done here,” Wahpepah said. “I think the Bay Area is perfect for it.”
