Biography, Historical drama
Keyed by a penetrating, multi-layered performance from actress Cynthia Nixon in the lead role, writer-director Terence Davies’ delightfully subjective dramatized portrait of American poet Emily Dickinson explodes a common myth about the “Belle of Amherst”: That she was a dour, humorless Victorian recluse who spent her life shut up in her bedroom, writing poetry. Nixon’s Emily laughs, in the company of a sparkling cast of character actors portraying the people in the Dickinson’s life – notably Jennifer Ehle as her sister/best friend, Keith Carradine as her strict but fair father, Catherine Bailey as her sharp-tongued sister-in-law, Duncan Duff as her moody brother, etc. British Filmmaker Davies specializes in diving into still waters that run deep (The Long Day Closes, The Deep Blue Sea). This literary investigation is one of his best (126 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
