A Number

Having premiered in London in 2002 — when Dolly, the cloned sheep, was all the rage — British playwright Caryl Churchill’s A Number features an all-male cast and explores issues related to human cloning. In the production at Aurora Theatre Company, directed by Barbara Damashek and staged in its 49-seat performance space, Harry’s UpStage, the crisp script moves beyond the petri dish to address parenting, biological determination, and disturbing questions about self-identity. Bernard discovers he’s among an uncertain number of replicas cloned from his dad’s son, who’s also named Bernard. Things end badly after the Bernards meet and demand explanations for their duplication — and their father’s duplicity as keeper of family secrets. Only Michael Black, another clone, can soothe their father’s need to make up for poor past parenting. But Black is a man undisturbed by his clone-hood, which leaves the father in ambiguous territory, a man ironically cast adrift by his proliferative progeny.
