A Night of Revolutionary Poetry with Umar Bin Hassan Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Fri., Aug. 22, 8-10 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

With spoken-word emcee IseLyfe sampling the Last Poets' 1969 joint "Whitey on the Moon" in his new album, it's clear the Black Power-era group still resonates with modern audiences. This week, Last Poets emeritus Umar Bin Hassan visits Oakland's EastSide Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd.), where he will headline Thursday, Aug. 21's "Holla Back!" open mic and appear at Friday, Aug. 22's intergenerational spoken-word event, "A Night of Revolutionary Poetry" (8-10 p.m., $10). Hassan's residency project caps off with Sunday, Aug. 24's Bop Gun potluck and jam session (9-11 p.m.), at which EastSide will also celebrate its current gallery exhibit, Black Power in Print, a showcase of African American publications.
