A New Page: Painting in the 4th Dimension

When: Sept. 23-Oct. 17 2009

"Painting in the 4th Dimension" is the subtitle for this show of large digital prints by Turkish artist-activist and CCA alumnus BedriBaykam; his superimposed images, printed on lenticular sheets of plastic, hover in a shifting virtual subsurface space that seems to refract light waves and refresh pixels as we change positions -- hence the reference to Time and 4D. Whether photographed, drawn, or painted, Baykam's images derive from global pop culture (Marilyn, Che, Vincent, Rimbaud, Gauguin, Picasso, Pollock, JFK, MLK, Gandhi, James Dean, Cokes, cars, and cuties) and European art history (cranes de Cézanne, Guernicans, andMagrittean "practical man's mermaids"). The culture-jamming collage may be pure Dadaist/Surrealist juxtaposition updated, but Baykam's disquieting unwalled museums, packed with floating transnational signifiers and oddments of autobiography and Turkish history, are generous with their guilty pleasures. A New Pageruns through October 17 at Alphonse Berber Gallery (2546 Bancroft Way, Berkeley). or 510-649-9492
