Re: “The SS Farallon Takes On Water

I was a poor kid growing up in North Oakland near the border with Emeryville when I joined the Berkeley crew of the Farallon in 1983, and I remained an active member until I finished high school in 1988. I’ve continued to help out since then whenever I can. Because of the Farallon, I learned building, woodworking and mechanical skills, as well as rowing, navigation and much more, and I had access to activities I had never dreamed I'd get to try, like water skiing and surfing. The one-week and two-week cruises through the San Francisco Bay were my summer camp. I was not able to afford the already modest cost of many of the activities, and the Farallon leadership provided scholarships for me and many others like me. I gained skills and self-confidence that have continued to serve me well, and a commitment to helping others who have economic need that I carry forward as a small business owner in Oakland today, where I and my partners provide free and reduced cost health care services to those who need them. The Farallon is an important program, and the fact that it is one of the last of its kind makes it even more essential. It’s run by all volunteers - former crew members - out of love, because they want to be sure today’s youth have the chance to grow and learn as they did. Please support the Farallon by donating what you can. www.Farallon44.com
