A Few Good Men Reading Series Presents: SF Noir meets Oakland Noir

When: Sat., Feb. 25, 7 p.m. 2012

Brand-new to Books Inc. Alameda (1344 Park St.), the A Few Good Men reading series aims to be a "celebration of new voices, legacies, and to the spirit of the 1930s literary society." Syntactical confusion aside, it looks like organizers are off to a great start with the series' inaugural matchup, which features Joshua Mohr and Sam Benjamin reading from their respective recent releases on Saturday, Feb. 25. Mohr's Damascus is a dark, finely wrought novella about a heartbreakingly human cast of San Francisco barflies, while Benjamin's memoir, American Gangbang: A Love Story traces the author's transformation from Ivy Leaguer to porn-industry titan. As different as they are, both books present a bleakly funny look at the way we get by, and should be a joy heard together. 7 p.m., free. 510-522-2226 or
