A magnetic performance by actor Daniela Vega keys the story of Marina, a transgender female resident of Santiago, Chile who gets no sympathy whatsoever from her "in-laws" when her older male partner suddenly dies. What might have become a soap-operatic tearjerker in lesser hands, shapes up as a singularly enthralling character study of someone who holds her head up high, no matter what. Par for the course for director Sebastián Lelio, whose Gloria told a similarly straightforward tale about a senior citizen looking for love. Lelio has the knack. He wrote the screenplay with Gonzalo Maza (104 min., 2017, rated R)
