Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A bratty young American businessman (Dane DeHaan), sent by his company to bring back a colleague from an imposingly grand Swiss sanitarium, gets trapped there by a mad scientist (Jason Isaacs), his enigmatic “daughter” (the appropriately named Mia Goth), and a seemingly endless supply of eels. That’s the setup for director Gore Verbinski’s silly horror/thriller exercise, which he wrote with Justin Haythe. If we stare at it from the right angle, this gothic hullaballoo boasts impressive production values in its elaborate set pieces. But when we get right down to the ancient, creaky narrative flow-through, it’s one of the silliest items from Verbinski’s overflowing cabinet of silliness (The Lone Ranger, Mousehunt, The Ring, various Johnny Depp Pirate flicks, etc.). Let’s sue for malpractice (146 min., 2016, rated R) (K.V.)
