Re: “I Was Kicked Out of Federal Immigration Court — Because I'm a Journalist

The saddest commentary on what happened to you is that no other journalist attends these hearings. Where is the free press that seems limited to opinion pieces on the freedom of the press but does not test it in real life?

Re: “Two Highly Touted Oakland Charter Schools Quickly Closed, Now Owe the District Money

The implication is that Charter Schools can burn through public tax and grant money without accountability. How much does each pupil cost to educate in public school? How much for a charter? What is the salary levels of staff and teachers between the two? Too much administrative overhead? What accountability is there to any of this? In the end, these charter mavens do not seem to care about documenting real outcomes. They cannot claim real benefit for this program when the enrolled students were in it for so short a period and not compared with public school outcomes.

Re: “Oakland's Biggest Landlord is Fighting For His Life in Federal Court

And this is America? Even the little pests act like T. Rex, devouring anyone in their path. And our elected officials? They know all too well that justice delayed is justice denied. So, the "legal process" grinds on at glacial pace, leaving the injured with no recourse. Worse, the government--elected officials, judiciary, and bureaucrats have learned how to draw out the process to the point that may just succumb under the wheels of Corporate Greed and Opportunistic Predation. Welcome to Amerika---Death to Fair and Balanced!

Re: “Antoinette Serves Hotel Food for the One Percent

As one who stayed at the Claremont many times over the years, before it became chi-chi, it is appalling to hear how fancy they have become. I'd often look forward to quiet, excellently prepared breakfasts, even having one's omelet made to order. The view, the quiet atmosphere, and remarkably reasonable prices, given the setting, always made it a go-to experience. Too bad that the food mavens have trashed the place. Thanks for the warning!

Re: “Letters for the week of June 24, 2015

What comes next, preventive detention? If the elected officials think for one minute that predicting where crime will break out, is the next step to identify persons who might commit a crime and put them in jail, rather than risk that they could commit a crime? Any rational person will tell you that prediction is akin to tea leaf reading, ande ouiji boards. Where will all this lead, just go and watch the classic film, Fahrenheit 451, then tell me it can't happen here.

Re: “Campaign Contributions from Oakland Luxury Tower Developer May Have Been Illegal

To think that city officials can be "bought" for such paltry sums speaks volumes to their integrity (lack thereof). Who was it that said that one can understand corruption when it amounts to substantial sums, but to be bought for a pittance, well, that is rather like finding dog poop on one's shoes? They have no shame, thinking that when caught with their hand in the cookie jar they can just put the half-eaten bit back. Ah well, stay tuned.

Re: “Counter-Terrorism Officials Helped Track Black Lives Matter Protesters

Interesting that the CHP and local enforcement personnel are willing to characterize their monitoring of public events as part of anti-terrorism. It is a form of fear mongering gone amok. If these law enforcement people want to make "good" use of intell, send them to gun shows, rabid pro-"exceptionalism" events. It is the radical right that has caused more concern to rational thinking people than concerned citizens with reasonable concerns for over reach of law enforcement to foster fear in those who would otherwise want to express their concerns for true liberty.
