Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

Sound like it would be less expensive and less traumatizing if the government just provides everyone with a new non atmosphere polluting electric car.

Re: “Town Business: A New Police Headquarters. Does Oakland Have the Money?

The police building is pretty poor, but the roads we need to travel on to get there are even worse. I think our roads are a crime, and I should file a police report sometimes. Oakland tax payers voted to tax themselves for infrastructure improvements. How about the city council discuss putting people to work on the roads to get to the new building before they build the building?

Re: “The Big One: Scientists Say the East Bay is Overdue for the Largest Earthquake in Centuries. And We're Not Prepared.

Lot's of really dangerous structures around town. It is scary to think about Earthquakes, but we can't stick our heads in the sand and do nothing when some simple steps could save many lives.

Re: “It's Plaid or Nature

I took a walk in the park. However the idea of supporting our local small business and artists is really a good idea. I grew up in a suburb that only had chain stores, we are blessed in Oakland and Berkeley with cool stores locally owned, and even if it costs more it is money well spent me thinks.

Re: “Oakland City Council Tables Controversial Sale of Public Land for Luxury Tower

As I walk around Lake Merritt I think, what a jewel. Why not keep the land as open space parkland for children to play? There is plenty of room for high rise buildings 5 or 6 blocks West in the downtown. Just like we don't need Monsters in the Mission we don't need Largeness at the Lake.

Re: “The Tipping Point

I am still thinking that one of the unintended consequences of this ordinance will be to keep your average chain store or chain restaurant that typically pays minimum wage from setting foot in Oakland. Want to go to a Chick Fillet or Macy's, better head to Walnut Creek. I hope people will support all the cool new Oakland local owned restaurants, bars, stores etc. at the new higher prices. So the staff gets higher wages and we all live happily ever after, but time will tell.

Re: “Walgreens and an East Bay Real Estate Developer Seek Exemption from Oakland’s Living Wage Law

I think that we should give small "mom and pop" business exemptions, not chains. It seems to me we shouldn't be solving societies problems on the backs of small business. On the other hand we don't need chain stores to come into Oakland if they can't pay a decent wage. Since American big business goes to India, China etc. in search of cheap wages I suspect they will avoid Oakland like the plaque from now on in light of this new ordinance. And that's a good thing, lets all go out and buy from our local awesome small business, restaurants and bars that make Oakland unique. This purchase is a good donation to local people earning good wages at local business.
