Kristie Middleton got it right. Reducing (or eliminating) consumption of animal products needs to be recognized as the number 1 water-saving strategy for Californians to focus on.

The New York Times printed an op-ed by James McWilliams of Texas State University on March 8 (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/08/opinion/meat-makes-the-planet-thirsty.html) in which he says: "Changing one’s diet to replace 50 percent of animal products with edible plants like legumes, nuts and tubers results in a 30 percent reduction in an individual’s food-related water footprint. Going vegetarian, a better option in many respects, reduces that water footprint by almost 60 percent."
