Re: “Alameda County Trashes Library Books

I am extremely happy to hear that the Albany Library and Alameda County Library is finally performing the necessary work of removing older, outdated materials from their collection. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the new library manager for performing this work!
As a long-time Albany resident, I have had the following poor experiences related to weeding not having been performed at an adequate level in the Albany Library:
I could only find legal-self-help books that were out of date-often three older editions of a book next what might have been the newest one, but that was unclear-why hold onto older editions--it is confusing and provides poor service.
Travel books with completely out of date information/hours/addresses/etc-nothing worse than finding oneself at a restaurant address in a foreign country only to find out it's been closed for two years!
Books with pages falling out or yellowing pages.
Stuffed shelves that forced me to have to reach much higher than I ould for titles I did want.
Unshelved books I wanted but were in the back due to lack of space.
Collections not getting updated due to the idea than an adequate number of titles on a given topic were already in the library.
The photo that shows shelves that are half emopty is a great sign--it means that people are finding books and checking them out! Instead of books no one wants, the library is finally stocking books people take from the library-and isn't that what the library is for?
I say to the library staff resisiting the change: the public library is not your private hoarding warehouse-- it is a living thing and only has value in so far as it provides materials people want to read and these will be things that will not be in the library more than they will be in the library so deal with it!
