With regard to the assertion that "people aren't curing cancer because it's not an attractive thing to do," the assumption that high tech wealth is an elitist, Ayn Rand-esque capitalist enterprise is absurd. Google's unofficial company motto is "Don't be evil." And as for actually curing cancer, the same spirit of entrepreneurship, hard work, and a sense of collaborative community that has propelled tech in the Bay Area has infected the biotech community as well. As a part of Bay Area biotech, I know that the Bay Area is well on its way to being the world's single largest biotech cluster (if it isn't already). The growth has been absolutely stunning and it's based on the same principles that Bay Area high tech is grounded in.
