Re: “New Ballpark Could Devastate Lake Merritt's Birds

Really a good article. If they leave they leave. I would rather a minor league team that does not black mail a small city so suburbanites can have their fun at our expense. I think the lake is the most vital jewel in this twon and far more valuable then any of these franchises to the health of the city. We passed a big measure to restore it and look at all the good things we have had happening there since. Thanks Mr. Gammon for this one

Re: “Laney Students and Staff Express Concerns About the A’s Ballpark Plans

I think Kaval is being disingenuous. He said he has done neighborhood surveys. I know he had a meeting at La Estrellita, but that restarant is no longer representative of the neighborhood population. His whole mantra is private funding. Well that is appropriate as they are owned by a man fabulously wealthy who has drained the club of talent through his GM and just year after year received big money from MLB. You have the bond issue which we here in Oakland passed to improve water quality at the lake and the channel leading to it. For the first time in years folks are seeing striped bass in the lake and more fish from the bay. The walkway along the channel is lovely, and it has been money well spent. The Lake is the oldest bird sanctuary in the country and there is no study of noise implications for the wildlife that has returned to the area. I understood that there was money to be made available for the Coli site for infrastructure . Is that same money there for this project that was sprung on us?/ As the young man said, traffic around there is horrible in rush hour as we only have seventh street. No one entions that on the other side of Laney is OUSD headquarters scheduled for a rebuild. There are also three schools, Dewey , Met West and La Escualita. These schools plus Laney already have a trffic impact and when OUSD returns it promises to be greater still. 60 years ago the community was disrupted for the Nimitz and that is why the Buddhist Temple sits across from the park in front of Lake Merritt BART, as it was moved there. You now have a smaller temple a block from Laney as well. We all know that both East Lake and Chinatown will sufer massive disruption from this project. I am hoping Mr. Kaval is not totally wedded to this site and looks at Howard or the Coliseum, where he couldhave the advantage of being the sole tenant. The old Coli without Mt. Davis was a wonderful venue with it's veiw of the hilss an wonderful weather. The A's hav proven they can draw there, but most fans are like me. I will b glued to my tv set during the playoffs watching the ex A's play for contenders which this team has a possibility of being in the next year or so. Past practice tells us Beane will trade our budding talent as we are notably a farm team for other big league teams. I love the A's, but it hurts being one of their fans and this adds to the hurt.

Re: “In Praise of Oakland’s Koreana Plaza

Man you all are giving up all the Towns stuff, and now you got a chump from Hayward giving it up too. Oh Lawd why do we get all these losers?? That is the coolest place for a quick lunch, fresh fish, and good soups..the ramen comment is cool but the parking lot is going to be far worse, and that part of Tele has those stupid bike lanes so it drags through there...us neighbors love Koreana Plaza!!

Re: “City of Oakland Replaces Longstanding Coliseum-Oracle Board Members With Uber Lawyer, McElhaney

it never seems to matter who is on the board. I would just like them to hold the Dubs feet to the fire. There was a lot of money paid into expanding Oracle in 97. They are obligated, take them to court. They are not going to be tenents much longer.

Re: “Q-and-A: 'Dogtown Redemption' Recycling and Homelessness Documentary Will Have West Oakland Debut This Saturday

Some of the folks like me a retired OUSD administrator save our soda cans. I go down there twice a year, get my little $30 bucks worth. I have interacted with the shopping cart folks and most are just so very interesting. Yea a bunch do drugs and bunch do not. I went to chidcare down the street at the Old Clawson school. This was in the late 40's as i started elementary school in 1949 at Durant. I remember when all the black firemen were on Magnolia, in what the white firefighters called the "coon " wagon. Some of our chiefs sarted there in the 40's, and I know Burl Smith who grewup on 34th, served as a Tuskeggee airmen started there. his mom and dad were our neighbors. I feel bad for the newbies there who have no answer for the homeless, the disposessed who are veterans of both that neighborhood, yea I still call it Clawson not the dope dealers Dogtown appellation . For the life of me, I cannot understand why these mostly white new folks have such disdain for the area they have moved into and do not want to know the history of a neighborhood destroyed by 580. I think it is obscene that these folks have no where to go, theese gleaners who clean up our scraps . That folks in my town are so ignorant of history of an area they do not know that in Anglo culture we have always had gleaners as thats what these folks are. So where are they to go..All the way down Peralta? What plan have these new folks fomr adding to the area instead of just living there? do they particiapte with the kids at neighboring Popular Park, or he veggie garden across from alliance? Man my town is losing it's soul.
