Re: “Rita Moreno's Lifelong Quest for Non-Sterotypical Work

Breakthrough roll? Is that a new kind of roll you buy at the bakery? I believe the headline writer meant role. I don't know how the editors could have missed that. I read somewhere the entire editorial staff was fired, if that's true it's starting to show.

Re: “An Apology and a Pledge

It seems to me the resignation of publisher Buel is a total over-reaction. Now the paper is being sold too I'm reading. All that was needed here was a simple apology. We all make mistakes, removing these stories like Buel did was not that big of deal Nothing I have read indicates to me that publisher Buel is a "bad guy". Look, we are all human, people make mistakes, it's not that big of deal.

Re: “Oakland's Dive Bar Aficionados Adapt to the City's Changing Bar Scene

The Kingfish always set the standard for dive bars for me, a lot of real characters hung out there. Once awhile, as I remember it, the Cal Sororiety women would all swoop in at once - I recall the old guys saying "geez, these preppy Cal girls all got fat butts now, Don't they?" I used to get a kick out of that. It's was true, 80's era preppy girls all had fat butts, they didn't work out like they do now.

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

Hiring a private detective to investigate leaks? Sounds like something from the Nixon administration. I recall they called the leak investigators in the Nixon administration "Plumbers". All of them ended up in federal prison. I think Mayor Schaaf is getting carried away - the public has a right to know what's going on in City Hall. Even these "closed door sessions" are a little dubious. I think Mayor Schaaf's leadership has been horrendous. This police scandal with the teenage hooker - other departments are involved but they are not firing police chiefs right and left or trying to put civilians in charge of PD. You've got a few bad apples on OPD - other department too - big deal fire them and let's move on - you don't need the historonics we've seen from Schaff. Her wacky leadership has got the national media covering the teenage-hooker story - which has lead to a all this bad publicity for Oakland. Oakland is a great City - got some problems - like most metro cities - - big deal, solve them without all this soap opera like drama. Schaaf isn't doing that - she's making things worse with her wacky behavior.

Re: “Waste Management Launches Referendum Drive to Win Back Oakland Garbage Contract

I recall Larry Tramutolas specialty - as a political consultant - has been helping school districts up and down the state pass bond issues to fix up the schools. He's a bad guy? Since when? There's thousands of kids up and down state sitting in new classrooms because of Tramutola.

Re: “Former DA's Testimony Could Prove Costly for Taxpayers

This reporter John Geluardi's "journalism" doesn't even pass the laugh test. From day one in his coverage of this matter he has been spoon fed information from Gresset and his lawyers. There has been no effort to get the other side of the story. Whatever Gresset and his lawyers tell this gullible reporter get's reported as "fact". The reporter also has a habit of slipping his own opinions and conclusions into his stories -which he reports as fact, and he also can't seem to put what little information he has gathered into any kind of context. Very simply, this is shoddy reporting at it's worst.
This reporters reporting skills are so bad you could use his series of stories on the Gresset matter as a "case study" on how not to write a story. This reporter Guelardi is a fool and should find a new line of work.

Re: “Where to Drink

The Kingfish is a nice Cal hang-out, I think author here was remiss in not mentioning this legendary dive. But all the other places he mentioned are pretty good.
