Re: “Speaking Tango with Trio Garufa

Dear Ms. Swan,

I am the President of the Bay Area Argentine Tango Association. First, thank you for acknowledging the world of Bay Area Argentine tango and for showcasing Trio Garufa, an excellent ensemble of whom we’re very proud. But as others have commented, your article shortchanges our community.

Contrary to your statement that our tango scene “regularly flirts with obsolescence”, it’s estimated that there are over 2500 people in the Bay Area who dance Argentine tango and no shortage of social dance venues — including small and intimate, large and traditional, alternative, you name it. Clearly you only experienced one facet of our large and very diverse Tango community. Along with Trio Garufa, there are a number of excellent live Tango bands and musicians in the Bay Area who both apply their talents to interpreting traditional Tango standards as well as exploring new musical territories. We will be showcasing some of the bands in Union Square park on the 1st Sunday of each month through the summer where anyone can enjoy learning and dancing tango in a beautiful outdoor space.

With the number of people joining the dozens of classes happening every week around the Bay Area, there’s no doubt that Argentine tango is not only here to stay, but is flourishing. We are truly blessed to be one of the largest and most vibrant Tango communities in the U.S. I invite you to check-out for an overview of all the events going on in the area. I would be delighted to show you that Tango in the Bay Area is much richer than the picture you’ve painted in your article.
