Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

- 90% of homeless people are temporarily homeless, so ten times who you see on the street at any one time are pulling themselves up by the bootstraps, just like you imagine, getting some room, moving out of town, finding some solution. It's just you're not helping them do that.
- The median rent in Oakland is like $2900, and most people without showers and jobs aren't going to get in shared housing. It's difficult to see how anyone leaps from the street to a job bringing home $40K after taxes.
- People often bring up mental health issues like it was a sign homelessness wasn't real or something. The mental health hospitals and SNFs are full of people who would otherwise be homeless, and most of the people ready for discharge are awaiting some kind of supportive housing. You have paid for nothing like the number of beds and programs needed to support schizophrenics and poor opioid addicts.
- The people that really bother yall are the ones that act out, e.g. the ones with multiple psych disorders and substance abuse issues, and are the people who are not responsive to tough love style solutions, they just need care. There's way more people who want care and who are not getting it than who refuse care, so if you want to obsess on stronger 5150 laws as they do in San Francisco applicable to ten out of ten thousand people, maybe you should also pay for some more beds.
- you always hear this reducing your property values like it was some sort of real cost, but it's the homeowners who are causing this problem. Yall are pretty much all millionaires, who made bank from an inappropriate rise in home prices relative to incomes which excludes all future generations from access to property, and I'm personally not super concerned if your net worth drops to 950K or something because you don't want to put in public bathrooms and someone pees on your porch.
- I mean, this is a genocide in progress. The least you can do is let people use plywood to help themselves, and there's been some real trouble letting people do the least they can do, which is why our shanty towns are considerably worse than those in supposedly poor countries, because there's this genocide in progress. You want to think the genocides are all in Texas border prisons while you whistle past the ones right in front of your face, because, I guess poor black schizophrenics brought it on themselves for bad behavior?
